The Philippines sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, and the honest problem is abundance: you can't do it all in one trip. A good Philippines diving holiday starts with three questions — what's your level, when are you travelling, and is anyone coming who won't dive? From there, the islands sort themselves out.
The headline sites are real, not brochure talk. In Coron, a Japanese supply fleet sunk in 1944 left a cluster of WWII wrecks at recreational depths — some of the finest wreck diving in Asia, best for intermediate divers and up. Off Malapascua, north of Cebu, dawn dives at Monad Shoal give you the world's most reliable encounters with thresher sharks; it is a keen-diver's base rather than a luxury-resort one, and four or five nights is usually plenty. At Moalboal in southern Cebu, a bait ball of millions of sardines swirls just metres off Panagsama Beach — divers and snorkellers share it, and it is one of the few world-class encounters you can reach without a tank.
For whale sharks, we'll talk you through both options honestly: Oslob in southern Cebu offers near-guaranteed swims, but the animals are fed, and plenty of travellers prefer to skip it on principle; Donsol is the natural, seasonal alternative — wonderful when it delivers, never promised. We lay out the trade-offs and let you choose. From Dumaguete, a short crossing reaches Apo Island, a long-protected marine sanctuary where turtles graze the seagrass and the reef feels genuinely wild.
And Bohol deserves a special word, because it is the best all-round base in the country and the finest place to learn — both Open Water courses and freediving. The dive base is Alona Beach on Panglao, with most sites just ten to forty-five minutes away by banca. Balicasag, the "jewel of Bohol", is the star: sheer walls and turtles across sub-sites like Black Forest, Cathedral Wall and Rico's Wall, plus a turtle sanctuary where sightings are all but certain. Certified divers add Pamilacan — Dakit-Dakit and the Spanish Tower — while Napaling combines a dramatic wall with a shimmering sardine cloud, ideal for freediving, photography and an easy check dive on day one. For macro, Cabilao hides pygmy seahorses and other small treasures; and Anda, quieter still, rewards those on a return visit.
Matched to your level and season
Learning? Panglao and Moalboal are ideal for an Open Water course wrapped in a proper holiday, with warm, forgiving water and short boat rides to the sites. Certified and after variety? Combine Bohol, Moalboal and Malapascua in one clean arc through the south and north of Cebu. Advanced, and chasing the big stuff? Add Coron's deeper wrecks or, in season, a Tubbataha liveaboard. Broadly, the dry months of November to May bring the clearest water and calmest crossings, though there is good diving somewhere in the country all year round.
Two rules we never bend. First, the sea decides: conditions shift day to day, so we plan flexibly and let your guide choose the best site each morning rather than forcing a fixed list. Second, we always build in a no-fly buffer — no serious dive the day before you fly, so nitrogen and cabin pressure never become a problem. Your dive centres matter as much as your hotels, and we work only with operators we know first-hand for safety, servicing and the quality of their guiding.
